After midnight, the phone rings while I’m still sitting in front of my laptop, googling things related to Rohypnol and making notes in a Word document about possible scenarios that could have happened. It’s a withheld number. I let it ring, dubious about answering it when I don’t know who’s ringing.

In the next two minutes, I receive three more calls from the withheld number. I’m starting to get worried now. Who would be calling me at this hour unless something is wrong? My mind starts to run away with itself thinking of the possibilities and when the withheld number rings my phone for a fifth time, I answer.

“Yes?”

“Katie?”

“Who is this?” I ask, although I’m pretty sure I recognise the voice.

“You’ve hardly forgotten me already, I’m sure. In fact, I know you haven’t.”

As I thought. Declan. And he’s pissed.

“Why are you ringing me at this hour of the night, Declan?” I can’t keep the annoyance out of my voice.

“I should be the one asking you questions. Like, why did the gardai contact me today to find out where I was last Saturday night?”

I hold the phone out as Declan launches into a drunken diatribe about how he doesn’t want to be dragged into whatever trouble I’m after getting myself in, after all the trouble I’ve caused him. His rage meanders into tales of woe about all the things that have gone wrong for him since we broke up. By the time he’s graduated on to how he wishes he’d never met me in the first place, I’ve had enough.

“Declan, shut the hell up. You are the one who left me. I’ve accepted that with grace over the years, I feel, and I’ve never given you too much of a hard time over it. I’ve moved on. The gardai contacted you as a matter of course, just like they contacted everyone else in my life to check on their whereabouts. It wasn’t anything personal.

“I’m sure you were probably too drunk last Saturday night after a full day of drinking even to consider kidnapping someone, quite aside from the fact that you were abroad, from what I hear. You’d probably have done well to get your zip down in time to piss at the time I was taken. Now, kindly fuck off and leave me alone. I have enough to worry about.”

I hang up, shaking. Declan could be very intimidating when he was angry. I’m just glad the conversation was over the phone and not face to face.

It takes a while before I eventually fall asleep, wondering what tomorrow will bring.
